No matter how you slice it, the favorite wins one out of three races. No ifs, ands, or buts. One thing you can decide is when the race has a good favorite or a bad or beatable favorite.

Good favorites have all the handicapping elements you want in a winner: speed, class, pedigree, conditioning, a good jockey, a good trainer, and a race shape that’s to his advantage. Good favorites are horses you want to key, meaning to put in the win position in exotic wagers, which I cover in Chapter 15. A well-deserved favorite is called a “free bingo square.” Like the center square in bingo, a good favorite should look like a universal winning number. You can try to beat good favorites, but going with the flow and letting them make money for you is usually better.
